Sport: Tennis
Home of the All-England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club and The Championships – an annual grand slam tennis event – Wimbledon is ideally suited to hosting one of the biggest tennis tournaments the UK has ever seen.
The design and build
Located in southwest London near Richmond Park and the World Heritage Site of Kew Gardens, Wimbledon is the only remaining major grass-court tennis venue in the world.
The club covers more than 42 acres in total, and features 19 grass courts, six American Clay courts and five indoor courts.
Wimbledon's Center Court was opened in 1922, and is one of the most famous courts in the world. It has been updated over the last few years, with the addition of improved stands and a retractable roof.
Before and after The Championships this summer, temporary facilities will be installed in preparation for the London 2012 Games.
After the Games
All temporary facilities will be removed, and the venue will continue to host the Grand Slam tennis tournament each summer.
