Chinese people, including Taiwan compatriots, will resist separatist schemes, official says
Although Beijing aims to undertake every effort for peaceful reunification, the Chinese people, including Taiwan compatriots, have the resolve, confidence and ability to stop any separatist schemes, a senior Taiwan affairs official said on Monday.
Zhang Zhijun, director of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, made the remarks in response to a question whether Beijing will take military force for cross-Straits reunification. “Peaceful reunification is the wish for all Chinese people and we will show the greatest kindness and try our best for peaceful reunification,” Zhang said on the sideline of the first plenary meeting of the 13th National People’s Congress, the top legislature.
“However, if some people insist on supporting ‘Taiwan independence’ and destroying our home, the Chinese people, including Taiwan compatriots, won’t allow it,” he said.
Zhang also said the tension between the mainland and Taiwan has been caused by Taiwan administration’s failing to recognize the 1992 Consensus, which embodies the one-China principle.
