Weather forecasting services are world leaders, meteorological chief says
China's meteorological and weather forecasting services are world leaders, Liu Yaming, head of the China Meteorological Administration, said on Tuesday at the sidelines of the ongoing annual session of the national legislature.
The weather forecasts have been increasingly accurate, Liu added. Last year, the World Meteorological Organization listed the China Meteorological Administration as a world meteorological center, Liu said.
With nine meteorological satellites, China correctly forecasted all the 135 typhoons that formed in the Pacific and South China Sea in the past five years and all of the 36 that made landfall in the country, she said.
She also said there were more than 60,000 ground meteorological monitoring stations and 198 meteorological radars across the country, which help cover all urban areas and 90 percent of rural areas.
