Li Baoguo (1958-2016)
In an instruction in 2016, Xi called Li Baoguo an excellent intellectual and likened him to the "foolish old man on the Taihang Mountains," a character in a Chinese fable who relentlessly tried to remove the mountains in front of his house.
Li Baoguo, who taught at Hebei Agricultural University, championed poverty alleviation through afforestation. He spent more than half of his last 35 years on these efforts.
He successfully afforested more than 93,000 hectares of barren mountains and helped 100,000 farmers out of poverty.
