Franz Welser-Most & The Vienna Philharmonic
Date: Dec 2 - 7:30 pm
Venue: Shanghai Oriental Art Center
The Vienna Philharmonic, founded in 1842, is an orchestra considered to be one of the finest in the world. The Vienna Philharmonic is based at the Musikverein in Vienna, Austria. Its members are selected from the orchestra of the Vienna State Opera. Selection involves a lengthy process, with each musician demonstrating his or her capability for a minimum of three years' performance for the opera and ballet. After this probationary period, the musician may request an application for a position in the orchestra from the Vienna Philharmonic's board. Franz Welser-Most is one of the most distinguished conductors of our day. He has been music director of the Cleveland Orchestra since 2002 and his contract currently runs until 2022. The Cleveland Orchestra, which celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2018, has been acclaimed by The New York Times as deserving the title of "the best in America", owing to its exceptional programming, including numerous premieres and innovative staged opera productions - in the coming season they will undertake Pelleas et Melisande - which draw deeply on the artistic profile of the long-term cooperation with Welser-Most.
