This Day, That Year: June 10
Editor's note: This year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of New China.
On June 10, 1984, Zhu Jianhua set a world high-jump record by jumping 2.39 meters in Eberstadt, West Germany, as seen in an item from China Daily. Two months later, he won a bronze medal at the Los Angeles Olympics.
He first broke the record in June 1983, clearing 2.37 meters in Beijing. The same year, in Helsinki, Finland, Zhu became the first Chinese man to win a medal in the IAAF World Championships. He retired in 1988.
His legacy and gold jump continues in athletics. On May 30, 2015, Zhang Guowei narrowly failed to equal Zhu's national record of 2.39 meters when he came second at 2.38 meters behind Mutaz Essa Barshim's 2.41 meters in the Eugene Oregon IAAF Diamond Meet in the United States.
Cuban Javier Sotomayor Sanabria holds the high-jump world record of 2.45 meters, which was set in 1993.
In global track and field competition, increasing numbers of Chinese athletes have excelled.
Liu Xiang won the 110-meter hurdles at the 2004 Athens Olympics, equaling the world record of 12.91 seconds. He set a world record of 12.88 seconds in Lausanne, Switzerland, in July 2006.
The star hurdler won gold in the men's 60-meter hurdles at the 2008 World Indoor Championships in Valencia, Spain.
On the track, Su Bingtian in 2015 became the first Asia-born athlete to break the 10-second barrier. At last year's Shanghai Diamond League, he was narrowly beaten to 100-meter gold in a photo finish with Britain's Reece Prescod.
Earlier this year, Su clocked a stunning 6.49 seconds over 60 meters at a World Indoor Tour meet in Dusseldorf, Germany, to clinch victory.
Su also led the country's 4x100 relay team to a fourth-place at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
In track and field at the Rio Games, Chinese athletes achieved their best medal haul by winning six, including two golds.
