This Day, That Year: July 4
Editor's note: This year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of New China.
Shanghai has always been the fashion frontier in China.
In March 1986, the Shanghai Garment Trade Association was established.
An item from July 4, 1988, in China Daily showed a model in traditional Chinese clothing on stage in Shanghai. About 200 businessmen from the United States, who came to seek business ties with local companies, attended the event.
At the time there was an almost uniform style of dress, shades of gray, blue and green on streets across the country.
But now, from the runway to the red carpet, Chinese trendsetters in major cities like Shanghai are catching up and leading global fashion.
In 2010, Shanghai was officially designated a UNESCO City of Design, joining the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, which aims to foster international cooperation with, and between, cities committed to investing in creativity as a driver for sustainable urban development and cultural vibrancy.
Last year, the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show made its debut in Asia at Shanghai's Mercedes-Benz Arena.
The lingerie brand opened its first retail store in China in March last year, a four-floor, 1,475-square-meter space in Shanghai.
Besides Victoria's Secret, luxury fashion giants have been expanding their store networks in China to ride on the country's growing affluence and global presence.
Chinese designers have also grabbed significant attention on the global stage. During the September New York Fashion Week, 16 Chinese designers - the most to date - showcased their collections.
