It is now a folk art much enjoyed by local residents for entertainment and rite purposes such as sacrifice, festivals, and votive. By the late Qing Dynasty, shadow play rose to its peak, thanks to the success of a well-known master, Xie Changchun, in promoting and innovating the art.
