VALLETTA, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese calligraphy exhibition started here on Wednesday, featuring "one-stroke calligraphy" by Buddhist Master Hsing Yun, founder of Taiwan's influential Fo Guang Shan Monastery.

"One-stroke calligraphy" means that every piece of calligraphy is done in one stroke.

Master Hsing Yun also is known for his calligraphy works. Thirty-six pieces of the Master's calligraphy are showcased during the exhibition, including works on the theme of peace, harmony, kindness, positive emotion, etc.

"Chan is the spirit of Chinese culture ... Calligraphy is one of the four arts of a Chinese scholar. The artworks of Master Hsing Yun are the combination of Chan and calligraphy," director of the Chinese Cultural Center in Malta Yang Xiaolong said.

He added that this exhibition can help audience "understand the sprit and charm of Chinese culture".

Paul Bugejia, the chief executive officer of Malta Med Air, told Xinhua he enjoys this exhibition. "Those sentences (on the calligraphy artworks) are short, but have many meanings," he said.

Master Hsing Yun was born in 1927 in East China's Jiangsu province. For decades, he devoted his life to promote Buddhist social welfare, education, culture and charity.

The exhibition was organized by the Chinese Cultural Center in Malta and it will last until Nov. 29.
