This Day, That Year: Nov 14
Editor's note: This year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of New China.
On Nov 14, 1984, Lenovo was founded in Beijing's Zhongguancun tech hub by Liu Chuanzhi.
From a small business, Lenovo has been transformed into a global brand.
An item on March 27, 2004, from China Daily showed Liu, chairman of Lenovo, delivering a speech to mark the company joining the Olympic Partner Sponsorship program for the 2006 Winter Games in Turin, Italy, and the 2008 Games in Beijing.
In May 2005, Lenovo acquired IBM's personal computer business and agreed to purchase the company's Intel-based server business in 2014.
It became the world's largest personal computer maker in 2013.
From July to September, Lenovo's global PC shipments grew to 16.8 million units, taking about 24.7 percent of the total, according to data from market research company International Data Corp. This is the second consecutive quarterly growth and Lenovo continues to be the largest PC maker in the world.
In May, Lenovo gave a preview and demo of the world's first foldable personal computer as part of its broader push to keep innovating products in an atmosphere of fierce competition.
However, the declining demand for PCs and laptops is a major challenge facing it.
In 2012, Lenovo entered the smartphone market, and in 2014, it acquired the mobile phone handset maker Motorola Mobility from Google.
Early last year, Lenovo integrated its smartphone business into its China regional group, as part of the tech heavyweight's broader push to refocus on its home country to revive its mobile business.
In June last year, the company unveiled a smartphone targeted at younger consumers.
On Friday, Lenovo is scheduled to release the Z6 Pro 5G edition, according to its official Weibo account.
Today, Lenovo has grown into a company with products in more than 160 countries and regions.
