Curtain rises for Frankenstein
Famous English novel Frankenstein has been adapted into a play in Chinese and premiered at Inside-out Theater in Beijing on Dec 24.
Written by English author Mary Shelley in 1818, the story is about young scientist Victor Frankenstein who creates a terrifying sapient creature in a scientific experiment and his complicated relationship with the creature. It is considered to be the first true science fiction by English writer Brian Aldiss.
This time, the novel was adapted by British director Daniel Goldman and the play stars Zhai Tianlin and Wu Haochen. "The story is about a man who loses his mother and tries his best to prevent death, about one who sought love after losing it," Goldman said.
According to Zhai, the play is not just about love. "We cannot just say if Frankenstein was wrong to create the creature or the creature was wrong to kill Frankenstein's family. Both of them had their reasons to do such things, but it is still a tragedy."
The play will run until Jan 1.
