University student volunteers to join in virus fight
A student from Hebei University of Technology has been working as an inspector for a week at an expressway entrance in Zhangjiakou, North China's Hebei province, after she volunteered to make her contribution to the country's fight against the novel coronavirus.
Before she started her volunteer work, Zhang Yongping, 23, stayed at her home during the ongoing winter holiday near Beixinbu East expressway entrance in Huailai county, which leads to Beijing.
"I want to do my small part during the joint fight," said Zhang, who is a member of the Communist Party of China. She said a member of the CPC should be in the vanguard when difficulties show up.
The small part she mentioned is to get up at about 5 am, equip herself with gear like a protective suit, mask, gloves and temperature detection device, check the temperature of each traveler in every passing vehicle at the expressway entrance and report anyone with a fever to a local hospital. People with a fever might have been infected with the virus.
The temperature outside where she is standing is as low as minus 9 C. However, the frigid winter doesn't stop her from the voluntary work.
"The small part I am doing can stop the possible spread of the virus, and protect people's health. That's the reward for me," Zhang said.
