Visitors appreciate traditional Chinese costume from the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) in Beijing, on July 13, 2021. The Forbidden City Publishing House launched a new book on Tuesday featuring the collection of Bi Hong, a famed collector of Chinese classical garments. Over 60 court dresses from the Qing Dynasty and more than 110 Beijing embroidery patterns are included in the book. Through photos and related research articles, vital aspects of traditional Chinese costume, including the design style, texture and fabric, color combination, embroidery patterns, stitching and needle work, are covered in the book.[Photo/Xinhua]

According to Bi, the book is to comprehensively review the development of materials, decorative patterns, colors and craftsmanship necessary to turn fine cloth into exquisite artworks to wear. Beijing-style garments are famed for their refined materials and elegant flavor. The construction technique is now inscribed as a national-level intangible cultural heritage.

"Traditional Chinese garments emphasize the harmony among humans, clothes and the natural environment," Bi said.

"It bears a deep philosophical thinking and the core of Chinese aesthetics. The collection teaches the quintessence of ancient people's clothes-making technique, and mix it into Chinese fashion," she said.

A symposium also was held for the book-release ceremony to explore how to adapt traditional garments into modern life and thus nurture people's fine taste. Some of Bi's collection was on display for the ceremony.
