Villeneuve, known for Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival, has said in earlier interviews that he was obsessed with Herbert's novel when he was a teenager, and made the film as his love letter.
The film has already earned a high score at 7.9 points out of 10 on Douban, one of the country's most popular review aggregators, signaling a promising future in China's huge market.
