A 107-year-old COVID-19 patient has recovered and been discharged from a hospital in Shanghai on Sunday, Wenhui Daily reported.

The centenarian patient, along with the other three members in her family, including her 86-year-old son, were admitted on April 11 for Omicron infection to the Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center Affiliated to Fudan University, a designated hospital for treating COVID-19 patients.

The elderly woman suffered from many underlying health conditions, such as Alzheimer's disease, that required assistance with daily personal care. She also needed to take medications used for the treatment of anxiety, insomnia and hypertension, which could interfere with the drugs for COVID-19. All these presented challenges for the doctors and caregivers.

She was treated with a comprehensive therapy based on the ninth edition of diagnostic and treatment protocols for novel coronavirus, combined with a local treatment plan.

After two weeks' careful treatments, the patient gradually recovered and all four members of the family met discharge standards to leave the hospital.

Since the start of the latest outbreak in Shanghai, the hospital has taken 1,131 COVID-19 patients aged above 60, which accounted for 23.97 percent of all the infections. Among them, 336 cases were aged above 80, accounting for 7.12 percent.

The hospital has been making different plans in treating the severe cases according to their individual conditions. More precaution measures were also adopted to prevent the cases from worsening.

At present, 838 patients aged above 60 have been discharged from the hospital.
