An online academic symposium that brought together experts to explore how to use space technology to protect cultural heritage was livestreamed on video-sharing platforms, including Bilibili and Tencent News, on China's Cultural and Natural Heritage Day on Saturday.

The event, held by the International Centre on Space Technologies for Natural and Cultural Heritage under the Auspices of UNESCO, aims to set up a platform for domestic and foreign experts to share their achievements and experience in protecting cultural and natural heritage across the globe, while improving the public's awareness of the significance of heritage conservation.

Chen Fulong, a researcher with Aerospace Information Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences, delivered a report on how to use remote sensing technology to preserve cultural heritage sites at the event. He introduced successful cases of using frontier technologies to protect cultural heritage sites, such as the Great Wall and Angkor Wat, and encouraged wider collaboration among groups from various academic backgrounds in better carrying out the protection works.

Topics such as the digital protection of agricultural heritage, the prospect of virtual tours, as well as conservation of the traditional rusticity of rural villages were also discussed at the event.
