Chinese choreographer, artist wins lifelong achievement award in US
Shen Wei, choreographer, visual artist and the artistic director of Shen Wei Dance Arts, was honored with American Dance Festival Award for lifetime achievement on July 16.
Established in 1981 by emeritus Charles L. Reinhar, director of the American Dance Festival Award, the annual prize honors choreographers who have dedicated their lives and talent to the creation of modern dance.
"Compared to artists who receive their lifetime awards when they are 60 or 70, I'm much younger since I'm just 50 years old. I'm very excited and though it's a lifetime award, I still have lots of ideas to create with my art works," said Shen.
Shen's latest dance piece, Summary, premiered during the American Dance Festival Award ceremony at the Reynolds Industries Theater on July 16. His new art piece, Suspension in Blue, was also displayed onstage.
"Shen Wei is one of the most innovative choreographers of the 21st century. His original movement, fusing Eastern and Western traditions combined with his exquisite costume and set designs, create life-size visual feasts that transport and thrill audiences. We are so pleased to present him with this award and to celebrate the 22nd anniversary of the founding of his company at ADF," said American Dance Festival's executive director Jodee Nimerichter.
Shen is in residence at American Dance Festival during the 2022 season working on his latest American Dance Festival commission.
