In this series of A look at Young Party Members dedicated to the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, we travel throughout the country to meet young CPC members who are making a difference in several fields. In this episode we look at two medical workers at the China-Japan Friendship Hospital in Beijing who left Beijing to answer the call when their help was needed to tackle COVID-19 in Wuhan, Hubei province, and Changchun, Jilin province.

Zheng Qiong, a nurse in the breast and thyroid surgery department, was dispatched to Wuhan when COVID-19 broke out there in early 2020. She managed to keep not only her own spirits up, but those of patients who were fighting the disease as well. She describes her job as one that "requires a high sense of responsibility, care, patience and empathy". Every decision could mean the difference between life and death, she said, so "we can't afford a single mistake".

Ding Ruixin, a medical technician in the pathology department of China-Japan Friendship Hospital, went to Changchun in 2020 to support local nucleic acid testing. "The situation was urgent," Ding said. "We got down to work straight away." She pressed on despite an increasingly heavy workload, she said, strengthened by "the power brought by the Party".

In the face of a worldwide pandemic both medics sought to make their country and the Party proud throughout their service as they worked on the frontlines. To them being a Party member means being strong and resilient and answering the call whenever there is a need.

See their stories in this episode and learn more about what being a young CPC member means to them.
