A 7.8 magnitude earthquake has killed more than 7000 people in Turkiye and Syria. Seismologists say it is likely to have been one of the deadliest quakes this decade. But why? It happened at shallow depth. There were several significant aftershocks, and cold winter weather could make it harder for people trapped under rubble to survive.
