Honduras' move the right call for its people: Editorial flash
By announcing her country will establish diplomatic ties with the People's Republic of China, President Xiomara Castro of Honduras has made the right choice.
Castro was honoring her pledge made during her campaign, and will open the way for further cooperation with the world's second-largest economy. Her government's announced negotiation with China on building a hydroelectric dam is but one example.
In a statement, Taiwan's "foreign ministry" asked Honduras not to "fall into China's trap", but their definition of "trap" is rather vague and contrary to the Honduran people's interests. With Honduras gone, the number of countries in this world recognizing Taiwan has dropped to 13, and the day will come when it falls to zero.
Geographically, South America is a long way from China. But near or far, everyone knows there is only one China and Taiwan is part of it.
