Mancini resigns as Italy head coach
ROME -- Roberto Mancini has resigned as head coach of Italy, the country's football governing body FIGC announced on Sunday.
Mancini took over the national side in 2018 and guided the Azzurri to the Euro 2020 championship. However, his side failed to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, missing the showpiece event for the second time in a row.
Mancini's contract was due to expire in 2026, and only a couple of days ago he had been appointed co-ordinator of all ranks of national teams.
"A significant page in the history of the Azzurri ends, having opened in May 2018 and concluded with the Nations League Finals 2023. Between that, the victory at Euro 2020, a triumph achieved by a squad where all the individuals were able to form a team," read a FIGC statement.
The FIGC did not disclose any further information, but promised to announce a new coach soon for the upcoming Euro 2024 Championship qualifiers.
