Lao She (1899-1966) is one of the iconic writers of modern China. His masterpieces Teahouse, Rickshaw Boy, and Four Generations under One Roof have had a profound impact not only in China but also on the world, and are considered shining gems in the history of literature in the past century with their unique humanistic care and highly infectious artistic charm.

To mark Lao She's 125th birthday, we are soliciting clues about the authorship of the first English translation of Lao She's first novel Lao Zhang's (Lao Chang's) Philosophy (Cambridge Edition). The English manuscript of more than 300 pages, in the collection of the Needham Research Institute at the University of Cambridge, is typewritten, unsigned, and has annotations with three different kinds of handwritings.

We welcome relevant information and clues from all over the world. If you have information about the authorship, please email it in detail, including the translator's nationality, name, occupation, and work experience to [email protected] by May 2, 2024. You can also attach supporting materials that can confirm the authorship and relevant clues, including manuscripts, letters, and photos. The results will be announced during the 2024 Beijing Writers' Day.
