The World Internet Conference (WIC) held its Member Representative Symposium in Xi'an, Northwest China's Shaanxi province, on April 15.

Ren Xianliang, secretary-general of the WIC, presided over and addressed the symposium.

Ren noted that the WIC has made positive progress in its work, and achieved new breakthroughs in its global development and services.

Choosing Xi'an, the starting point of the ancient Silk Road, as the host city of the WIC Digital Silk Road Development Forum, Ren said, is conducive to inheriting the Silk Road spirit and promoting the co-building of the Digital Silk Road.

The event will help bridge the digital gap among countries and regions involved in the Belt and Road Initiative, and create a new platform for international economic cooperation, he added.

Ren put forward four suggestions for the WIC to continue its platform role for promoting the building of a community with a shared future in cyberspace.

First, the WIC should deepen technological innovation and application for public good.

Second, it should pool wisdom and strength in promoting rule-making and standardization.

Third, it is necessary that the organization foster inclusive growth and equal benefits through mutual assistance.

Last, the WIC should work with different parties to advance the implementation of concepts and governance reform.

Francis Gurry, vice-chair of the WIC, also attended the symposium, where representatives from domestic and foreign enterprises and industry institutions such as Intel, SAP, Micron Technology, the Lao National Internet Center, the Center for New Inclusive Asia, Ping An Group, Alibaba Group, Sohu, 360 Security Group, MTel Telecom, Hangzhou Dbappsecurity Co Ltd and Yinxiang Biji, gathered to discuss the future development of the WIC and industry hot topics under the theme of "Connectivity and Shared Prosperity—Jointly Building a Community with a Shared Future in Cyberspace".

The WIC also invited nearly 100 member representatives from international organizations, leading global internet enterprises, industry institutions and organizations to the symposium.
