One killed, two injured in shooting in central Vilnius
VILNIUS -- A lawyer was shot dead and two police officers were injured in a shooting on Thursday in central Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania.
The incident occurred in the morning inside a building close to Lukiskiu Square, one of the voting venues of Lithuania's early general elections. The lawyer, 69, was shot dead and two police officers were injured when they were carrying out a legitimate mission near the site.
The female officer was shot in the leg and the male officer sustained an injury in the chest, Ramunas Matonis, spokesman for the Police Department, told BNS. He said the injuries were not life-threatening thanks to their bulletproof vests.
Viktoras Grabauskas, an adviser to the Police Commissioner General, has confirmed that a suspect surrendered to the police.
The Central Election Commission told BNS that the voting was not interrupted by the incident. However, Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte, who was scheduled to cast her vote on Lukiskiu Square on Thursday at noon, moved to another station instead.
The motivation for the shooting is still under investigation.
