State Grid Corp of China, the world's largest utility that shoulders the task of safeguarding the country's economic lifeline, has made innovations to digitally transform the power grid, ensuring safe and stable power supply.

A local unit of State Grid has developed new intelligent devices to boost advanced productive forces through technological breakthroughs.

Recently, in Northwest China's Gansu province, the first integrated wide and narrow-band wireless special network for 750-kilovolt substations in the country was officially put into operation at the Gansu 750 kV Xizhou substation, said Chai Jing, director of the information communication center of the ultrahigh voltage subsidiary of State Grid Gansu Electric Power Co.

The move, expected to bolster the operation of the east-to-west power transmission corridor, can provide a safe and reliable data transmission channel for the application of intelligent equipment, while also offering convenient access for devices, reducing construction difficulty and lowering costs.

To enhance the "observable, measurable and controllable" capabilities of power grid equipment, State Grid Gansu has gradually deployed numerous IoT, or the internet of things, sensing terminals, collection devices, and intelligent equipment at its 750 kV substations.

"The new network not only establishes a 'dedicated high-speed channel' for data transmission of on-site intelligent terminals, but also lays the groundwork for future expansion of emerging business access applications," said Chai, adding that this helps boost the digital transformation of Gansu's power grid.

Chai noted that the company initiated the construction of the new network in March, aiming to connect mobile operation terminals, mobile monitoring cameras, inspection robots and other intelligent equipment, thus achieving unified data transmission for wireless collection devices and enhancing the security of digital business access within the substation.
