China's freestyle snowboarder Yang sends fans into frenzy with a podium finish
Boasting consistency in execution of his tricks, Japanese rider Ogiwara Hiroto finished on top of the men's roster with a winning combine of 169.5 points from his first two runs, while Italy's Ian Matteoli settled with a silver medal by accumulating 165.5 points in the final.
Matteoli, however, stole the show by scoring the highest point (97.75) for a single trick on the night after he landed the first-ever 2160 jump — effectively six rotations — in an official competition.
Su, as the defending Olympic champion and last year's Beijing leg winner, was affected by a shoulder injury at the Beijing World Cup, but is expected to come back strong after taking a break to recover, according to his Japanese coach Yasuhiro Sato.
In the women's top-eight final, Britain's teen sensation Mia Brookes landed a stunning third-run trick, following a successful first run and a false landing in the second, to claim her first World Cup title in Beijing with a winning total of 179.75 points.
"I didn't even plan on coming to win today," said the 17-year-old Brookes. "I just wanted to land my new tricks and just to be here is so sick, and to win it is insane."
Japan's Fukada Mari finished second, scoring 176.75 points, with two-time Olympic champion Anna Gasser taking third with 169.00.
