JERUSALEM - Israel's military said on Monday night it intercepted a surface-to-surface missile fired by militants in Yemen.

The missile triggered air raid sirens across large parts of central Israel and several areas in the south, the Israeli military said in a statement, adding that the Israeli Air Force intercepted the missile before it entered Israeli territory. The sirens were activated due to concerns about potential shrapnel from the interception.

Earlier on Monday, a U.S.-British naval coalition carried out two airstrikes on Yemen's Hodeidah province, targeting the At-Tuhayta district in the southwest, Houthi-run al-Masirah TV reported. The report did not provide further details, but residents in the district posted on social media about two powerful explosions that shook their homes.

Since November 2023, Houthi forces have intermittently launched attacks on Israel and disrupted "Israeli-linked" shipping in the Red Sea, citing solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza amid their conflict with Israelis. In response, Israel has carried out multiple large-scale airstrikes.
