Domestic trips by Chines up 11.7% in H1

Despite global economic downturn, Chinese people made 1 billion domestic trips in the first half of the year, up 11.7 percent year-on-year, according to data released by the State Administration of Tourism (SAT) Friday.

The growth was 5.4 percentage points higher than that of entire 2008, according to a survey launched by SAT and the National Bureau of Statistics.

Tourism revenue from domestic trips climbed 10.6 percent to 497.9 billion yuan ($72.88 billion) in the first half, but was two percentage points lower than the same period a year ago.

Affected by the global financial crisis and the spread of the A/H1N1 influenza, inbound trips fell 4.4 percent to 62.06 million in the first six months. Tourism income generated by those trips was $18.2 billion, down 12.3 percent.

Chinese citizens made 22.55 million overseas trips in the first half, up 1.1 percent year-on-year, according to the survey.
