Consumers from Zhejiang province were the second-biggest spenders by Alipay in 2015, only second to their counterparts from Shanghai, according to an annual report released by the country's largest online payment platform.

The report showed the average individual in Shanghai spent 104,155 yuan ($15,703) on Alipay last year. Zhejiang's consumers ranked second with average per capita expenditure of 94,192 yuan, followed by Beijing, and the eastern coastal provinces of Jiangsu and Fujian.

It is noteworthy that average individual spending in Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang province, reached 133,211 yuan in 2015.

The report said 65 percent of consumer transactions were made through mobile devices, up 15.8 percent from 2014. The Tibet autonomous region saw the highest proportion of mobile payments at 83.3 percent.

When it comes to catering services (excluding takeouts), people spent an average of 36 yuan per transaction nationwide. Braised chicken with rice was the most purchased food via Alipay last year.

Alipay has also been increasingly used to pay for transportation. The average expenditure for taxis on a national level was 20 yuan per trip. Residents of Hangzhou accounted for 11.4 percent of all taxi bookings in China, followed by Chengdu, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing.

The report also showed that young people are keen to use digital means to manage money, with 40.6 percent of Alipay's money management tool users last year being those born in the 1980s and 37.3 percent born in the 1990s.
