About China Daily

From print to the Web, from China to America, Europe and the rest of Asia, the China Daily Group is an authoritative provider of information, analysis, comment and entertainment to global readers with a special focus on China. While China Daily has firmly established itself as the leading English-language news organization in China since its founding in 1981, the group also publishes US, European, Asian and Hong Kong editions of the flagship brand, with a total circulation of 800,000. China Daily’s Print Media

China Daily Group has 12 print publications, including the mainland, US, European, Asian and Hong Kong editions, and the 21st Century English Education Media.

China Daily, the flagship newspaper founded on June 1, 1981, publishes 24 pages Monday to Friday and 16 pages on Saturday and Sunday. It uses cutting-edge design with dynamic pictures and artwork; and encompasses in-depth reporting and analysis.

China Daily US Edition was launched in 2009. It publishes 16 pages Monday to Friday, with a 24-page insert on Fridays. Circulation includes the United Nations headquarters, government agencies of the United States and Canada, universities, think tanks, major financial institutions and many leading companies.

China Daily European Weekly was launched in 2010. It offers 32 pages of news and views from China and the European continent each week. In 2011, it won the Launch Paper of the Year award presented by the UK Association of Circulation Executives (ACE); and the International Media Award sponsored by the Plain English Campaign.

China Daily Asia Weekly, also launched in 2010, offers 24 pages each week. It is a pan-Asian publication exploring issues and events from throughout the region.

China Daily Hong Kong Edition was founded in 1997, shortly after the return of Hong Kong to China. The edition, the only national newspaper published in Hong Kong, has 28 pages Monday to Friday and 16 pages on Saturday and Sunday. In 2012, its entries for the 2011 Hong Kong News Awards won 5 awards sponsored by the Newspaper Society of Hong Kong (NSHK).

China Watch (originally Reports from China) is a monthly publication distributed to millions of cosmopolitan readers as an insert in the Washington Post, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal in the US, and across Europe with International Herald Tribune and The Daily Telegraph.

21st Century English Education Media was launched in 1993. It includes the most popular English education weekly for English learners in China, as well as eight weekly publications for school and university students and teachers. There is also a 21st Century website and a 21st Century mobile newspaper. All of this has helped establish the 21st Century English Newspaper as the country’s leading brand in ESL (English-as-a-second-language) education.

China Daily’s Digital Media

China Daily’s digital media, with the China Daily website as its core, is a round-the-clock, multi-channel news network. It has seven website clusters and three mobile platforms, including English News, Chinese News, Business, Entertainment and Language Tips, as well as the China Daily smart phone and tablet apps, China Daily Mobile Website and multimedia messaging service.

China Daily website (chinadaily.com.cn): Launched in 1995, it is a comprehensive multimedia outlet and China’s most influential English-language Web portal. It encompasses news reporting, information services, online communities and language learning, with more than 30 subsidiary websites and 300 channels under seven website clusters. Its daily page views now exceed 31 million, with about 60 percent of visitors from overseas.

China Daily apps: China Daily news apps provide essential news both at home and abroad, as well as culture and travel tips for users on the go. The smart phone and tablet apps are now available at Apple App Store and other mainstream app platforms, including Android, BlackBerry, Symbian and Amazon-Kindle. To date, worldwide iPhone and iPad downloads have reached about 600,000.

China Daily multimedia messaging service (MMS): This service includes the bilingual China Daily Mobile News (separate China Mobile and China Telecom versions) and a China Daily PDF edition on China Unicom.

China Daily eClips: Launched in January 2007, it is distributed to 250,000 influential readers in politics, business and academia as well as in other fields.

Asia News Photo website (asianewsphoto.com): Launched in March 2006, this website was founded by China Daily, the only member of Asia News Network on the Chinese mainland. It represents 21 newspapers in 19 Asian countries and regions, as well as nearly 2,000 registered photographers. It has an archive of more than 2 million photos and provides an Asia-focused photo service to media outlets worldwide.

Newscartoon Website (newscartoon.com.cn): Launched in July 2001, it is hosted by the China Daily website and jointly operated with the China Journalistic Caricature Society. It is China’s largest professional cartoon website, with thousands of cartoonists and illustrators contributing to it and more than 100,000 cartoons and illustrations in its archive.

China Daily has been building a platform for effective global communication by hosting such events as the Beijing-Tokyo Forum, the China Daily Asia Leadership Roundtable, the 21st Century National English Speaking Competition, the Changing Asia-Asia Press Photo Competition, the University Cartoon Competition on Environmental Protection.

Beijing-Tokyo Forum

Founded in 2005, the Beijing-Tokyo Forum is an annual large-scale international symposium jointly sponsored by China Daily and Genron NPO, a Japanese non-profit organization. It aims to provide a non-governmental exchange platform and improve China-Japan ties through public opinion polls and high-level dialogue. It has become the highest-level public diplomacy communication platform between China and Japan.

The China Daily Asia Leadership Roundtable

Founded in 2010, the China Daily Asia Leadership Roundtable provides a platform for focused dialogue and possible collective action on strategic issues relating to economic, business and social development in Asia. It is to enhance communication and increase mutual understanding between China and other countries.

The 21st Century National English Speaking Competition

Started by the China Daily 21st Century English Education Media in 1996, it is the most prestigious English-speaking contest in China. It is also the qualifying contest for the annual International Public Speaking Competition in London.

Changing Asia-Asia Press Photo Competition

Initiated by China Daily and the Asia News Network in 2006, the international photo contest focusing on the continent is held annually and attracts photographers from Asia and countries in other regions, such as the United States and the United Kingdom.

University Cartoon Competition on Environmental Protection

The competition, launched by China Daily in 2006, is an annual international competition for college students around the world. Its participants include the United Nations Environment Programme, the World Wildlife Fund for Nature and other international environmental and cartoon organizations.
