On March 8, 1966, the prefecture-level city of Xingtai in Heibei province was hit by the earthquake with a magnitude 6.8 on the Richter scale. Then on March 22 that year, the city was once again hit by a stronger quake with a magnitude of 7.2.
The earthquake damage included 8,064 dead, 38,000 injured and more than 5 million destroyed houses.
