China opposes US resolution on Darfur

China on Thursday expressed its "strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition" to a resolution passed by the US House of Representatives which urged China to press Sudan on the Darfur issue.

"Disregarding China's constructive efforts over the Darfur issue, the resolution condemned China without reason, tries to link the issue with the Beijing Olympics and wantonly interfered into China's internal affairs," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said in a written statement.

China expresses its strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition to the resolution and China has lodged a solemn representation to the United States, Jiang said.

It is well-known that the Chinese government has all along been making unremitting efforts to work for a political solution of the Darfur issue and has conducted effective exchanges and cooperation with parties concerned including the US side, she said.

China attaches importance to humanitarian and security conditions of the Darfur region: China has provided humanitarian material and financial aid to the region and the African Union mission, appointed a special representative on African affairs with an initial focus on the Darfur issue and decided to send an engineering unit to participate in the peacekeeping missions of the region, Jiang said.

China's important contributions to helping resolve the issue are obvious to all, the spokeswoman added.

She said that, out of political need, some people in the United States have capitalized on the Darfur issue and attacked China out of thin air. It is completely groundless and with ulterior motives, she said.

The US House of Representatives passed the resolution and sent wrong signals to the outside world which is not conducive to the China-US cooperation on and settlement of the Darfur issue, Jiang said.

China urged the US congress to view China's constructive role from an objective and fair perspective and immediately stop its wrongdoing of making political issues and groundless criticism of China, Jiang said.
