The first licensed space capsule hotel in China has appeared in the ancient city of Xi'an, in Shaanxi province, and proved popular with youngsters over the May Day holiday.

The hotel consists of 86 space capsule-like rooms, which are arranged on two floors, resembling the layout of berths on a train.

"Each capsule measures 2.1 meters long and 1.2 meters wide, and has a bed of the same size, suitable for one person," said Xu Meijiang, manager of the hotel.

"Every capsule is equipped with a hanging television, a small desk and an Internet connection, which meets the basic requirements of travelers," he added.

There are public washrooms and an entertainment area where guests can watch TV or play board games, Xu said.

The 86 rooms are divided into nine areas, each named after a constellation. There is a snoring section, too — guests who snore can ask to stay in the area called Leo, so they will not disturb others.

The price for a one-night stay ranges from 58 yuan ($9.2) to 68 yuan, Xu said. "Since the hotel opened on April 26, the occupancy rate has remained at 100 percent, and most customers are young people," she added.

The space capsule-style hotel is popular because it is economical and conserves energy, meeting the needs and values of young people who care about the environment, Xu said.
