A former police officer in South China has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for embezzling millions of yuan during the 2011 Shenzhen Universiade.

The man, identified only as Wang, worked for Shenzhen Public Security Bureau and was also a department manager for a security company, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported. He was sentenced on Nov 28 at a court in the city’s Luohu district.

The report said Wang embezzled 2.83 million yuan ($451,000) by exaggerating the number of security guards needed in a contract between his security firm and a power company to ensure power supply during the Universiade. He said 983 guards were required.

Wang embezzled wages, fees for dining and accommodation, transport and clothing for the security guards, the court said.

It was unclear whether Wang, who was also found guilty of disrupting public services, will appeal against conviction.

The Universiade is an international multi-sport event organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation.
