BEIJING - Communist Party of China (CPC) leader Xi Jinping on Friday called on Party members to enhance their ability to handle new problems and challenges through study and practice.

How to get a proper understanding of and appropriately handle new situations and problems arising in the country's development are important subjects faced by the entire Party, said Xi, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee.

The only way to achieve the goal is to enhance our capabilities through study, he said during a gathering held to mark the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Party School of the CPC Central Committee.

He called on Party members to not only put what they know into practice, but also acquire new skills by solving problems.

Historically, the CPC has relied on scholarship in making achievements, and it will surely continue to do so in its future development, Xi said.

"We have to advocate study and practice, if our cadres, Party, country and nation want to make progress," he said.

All Party members, especially officials, must feel the pressing task of enhancing learning in order to enhance their abilities, he added.

The CPC has always attached great importance to learning for all Party members, especially officials, and this has proved a successful experience that has been pushing forward the development of the cause of the Party and the Chinese people, he said.

The various goals and tasks set down by the 18th CPC National Congress, which was held last November, imposed new requirements on Party members' capabilities, he said.

China is set to build itself into a modern socialist country that is prosperous, strong, democratic, culturally advanced and harmonious when the People's Republic of China marks its centennial.

The "Chinese dream" of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation can only come true if the capabilities of the entire Party are constantly enhanced, Xi said.

"Compared with the past, our task of learning is heavier, not lighter," he said, urging officials to continuously enrich themselves, show persistence and industriousness in their work, and be "experts" in the fields in which they are engaged.

"Our study should be comprehensive, systematic and full of the spirit of exploration," Xi said, noting the novelty of the socialist cause with Chinese characteristics.

Xi said earnestly studying Marxist theory is "a special skill" for the Party and officials to do their work well, and grasping the Party's theories, principles and policies, as well as the country's laws and regulations, is "basic preparation" for officials and their "important political quality," Xi said.

"The aim of study lies in practice," he said, adding that the ultimate goal of Party officials boosting their study efforts lies in honing their working ability and sharpening their problem-solving skills.

Xi said the Marxist study style of applying theory to real-life situations should be advocated, and officials should bear questions in mind during the course of their study, adding that the people should be enshrined as mentors.

"Party officials should pursue studying as a quest, a hobby and a healthy lifestyle, which will make them happy and eager to learn," he said.

Xi acknowledged the role the Party school has played over the past 80 years, saying it has developed large numbers of Party-leading cadres for the revolutionary cause, socialist construction and China's transformation.
