A man threatened to kill himself by jumping off a bridge on Monday morning in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong province, after failing to negotiate over compensation with authorities for demolition of his home in Hunan province.

Prior to the attempt, Cao Zaifa, 43, from Chenzhou city of Hunan, had threatened on Jan 14 to cause bloodshed at kindergartens and a university in Guangzhou.

The threat in January caused a citywide warning and public concern over school safety in Guangzhou. Cao later turned himself in to Guangzhou police.?

Cao was released from police custody before the Lunar New Year after he was transferred from Guangzhou to Hunan. He returned to Guangzhou on March 2.

Cao stayed on the tight steel rope of Liede Bridge, which runs across Pearl River, into Monday evening, causing heavy traffic jams during rush hour.

"The local government has not negotiated with us over compensation. We came here to seek help from lawyers," Cao's daughter said, according to Yangcheng Evening News.
