Lightening Internet

The latest scientific research completed by the School of Computer Science of Fudan University can access the Internet using light-emitting diode (LED) instead of the widely used WiFi, Xinmin Evening News reported. Ten samples will be shown to public next month in Shanghai.

Poor students

Authorities from a university in Shenyang, Liaoning province, have asked all students applying for grants to give speeches on how poor they are. The top five poorest students will qualify for the grant after voting, Shenyang Evening News reported. The university said the move is to guarantee fairness, but students said it hurt their self-esteem.

Giant panda escape

A 10-year-old wild giant panda slept in a tree in Zhouzhi county, Shaanxi province, blissfully unaware that villagers and workers from the local natural conservation area were waiting under the tree all night, with a fishing net set up to prevent injuries if it fell. The panda eventually left and workers from the local natural conservation area said it was likely it escaped a predator by climbing the tree.

Mayor confession

Ji Jianye, the mayor of Nanjing, Jiangsu province, has been ordered to confess any wrongdoing under a Party procedure known as shuanggui, Xinhua News Agency reported. The move follows local media reports that the sums of money involved may exceed 20 million yuan.

Gutting death

A 79-year-old man in Pingguo county in Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region died after he cut his own abdomen with a knife to check a medical problem, gxnews.com.cn reported. His son said the man was severely ill and always felt his abdomen was very painful. The family discovered his body in the bathroom.

Sora Aoi's type

Sora Aoi (stage name of a Japanese adult video star) says the type of guy she likes is Wang Baoqiang, a well-known Chinese actor. Her popularity as an adult video actress has led to celebrity status as a media personality in Japan and abroad, www.cnr.cn reported.

Mummy gone missing

A mummy in official uniforms from the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) was found at a construction site in Xiangcheng, Zhoukou, Central China's Henan province, on Oct 9. But the next day, when descendants went to transfer the body for burial, they found the coffin and body were missing. Three coffins were dug up at the site, and the body in one of the coffins was still preserved. Only bones were left in the other two coffins. Xiangcheng has launched an investigation to find the body, www.hntv.tv reported.

A Xiaomi 2S smart phone exploded inside a handbag in an office in Chengdu, Sichuan province. The phone was purchased in June. A picture posted on Sina Weibo shows the bag was also burned.
