Asia-Pacific can be testing ground for 'new-type' Sino-US relationship

Beijing and Washington should take Asia-Pacific as the testing ground of their commitment to build a new-type relationship, rather than a competitive arena, the Foreign Minister said on Saturday.

Wang Yi made the remarks at a press conference focusing on China's foreign policies on the sidelines of the two sessions.

"We're willing to work with the US to jointly maintain peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific. We should have good interaction in the region," Wang said.

"We believe that Asia-Pacific should become a testing ground of our commitment to building a new-type relationship, rather than a competitive arena."

President Xi Jinping and US President Barack Obama vowed to build a new-type relationship between the nations during their meeting at the Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands in California in June.

Wang said it is "a solemn commitment" the two nations made to the world.

The minister said the experience and lessons learned in the past 35 years of bilateral relations mean the two nations have to respect each other.

"As long as we really respect each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity, respect each other's social system and development path and respect each other's core interests and major concerns, we'll for sure have a solid foundation (of bilateral relations) which can resist wind and rain,” Wang said.

Such a sound relationship will also benefit the world, he added.
