Key colleges and universities should expand their enrollment from Henan province and the province should be considered if Beijing aims to relocate some of its educational institutions, a deputy to the nation's top legislature has said.

According to Henan Daily, Li Guangyu, president of Wanfang College of Science and Technology Henan, blamed the imbalanced distribution of education resources earlier this week, saying it is increasingly difficult for students in Henan and other regions in central and western China to enter well-known universities.

Central and western China's enrollment rate at renowned universities remained low, Li said, as he shared the example of Peking University's enrollment from the populous province.

In 2008, the Beijing-based university accepted only 79 students from Henan out of 988,000 students who took part in the college entrance exam, an enrollment rate of less than 0.01 percent. However in Beijing, 118,000 students strove for the 282 places set aside for the region –an enrollment rate of 0.24 percent.

By 2013, the university's enrollment rate for Beijing rose to 0.31 percent but the percentage for Henan remained around 0.01 percent.

That's only the tip of the iceberg for renowned universities’ enrollment from Henan, Li said. "I can understand the enrollment rate of Beijing should be higher than Henan, but the gap of 31 times is beyond logic."

As such, he called for the nation to roll out a five-year working plan to raise the enrollment rate in western and central regions and make the percentage public.

He also advised to consider Henan if Beijing aims to relocate some of its universities.

"Henan has aspired earnestly for that to happen. It will be fine if only two of them are relocated to Henan," he added.
