China, Russia hold concert to mark WWII victory

Updated: 2015-09-05 11:46:44

China and Russia co-hosted a concert here Thursday to mark the 70th anniversary of China's victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the Allied Forces' defeat of Fascism.

The concert, titled "Ode to Peace" and staged at the St. Petersburg Philarmonia concert hall, was jointly organized by the Chinese Consulate-General in St. Petersburg and the St. Petersburg City Government's External Relations Commitee.

The repertoire of the concert featured a symphony named "Ode to Peace", which was composed by Chinese composer Zhao Jiping in dedication to the Nanjing Massacre of 1937-38.

It is the first time that the piece, proposed by Chinese Consul-General in St. Petersburg Ji Yanchi, was performed by a foreign orchestra.

The concert came one day after China held a series of commemorative events marking the Sept 3 V-Day, which Russian President Vladimir Putin was invited to attend.
