CONCERTS

Woodwind: Founded in 2003, the Guangzhou Woodwind Quintet is the city's first classical band with international background.

The members are bassoonist Michael Garza from the United States, flutist Nikaido Izumi from Japan, and the other three Chinese members, clarinetist Zhang Shi, French hornist Fu Lei, and oboist Chen Zhi.

Since its establishment, the band has set sights on becoming the top classical quintet band in Asia. It made its debut internationally in November 2005.

Symphony concert: Entitled "Spring Engagement," the symphony concert will be staged at the Xinghai Concert Hall on March 25.

Renowned Hong Kong conductor Yip Wing-Sie will take the baton.

Yip has won many awards in international conducting competitions. She was a recipient of the 10 Outstanding Young Persons Award in Hong Kong for her contributions to the music world. She was also the resident conductor of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra from 1986 to July 2000.

Well-known violinist Xu Weiling will present masterpieces by the late Russian composer Shostakovich at the concert.

EXHIBITIONS

Movement and painting: World- famous painter Kitty Holley is presenting her artworks at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art.

Born in Belgium and raised in Paris, the female painter has developed a unique style by combining painting and dancing.

Her creations represent the traces of gesture, and her ideas are completely rooted in her dancing practice and many different experiences of travel and research.

Time: 9 am-5 pm, until March 19

Watercolour memories: Zhong Anzhi was one of the most successful watercolour painters in China.

She taught watercolour painting at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts before her death in 1992.

Some of her works collected by her students will be on show at the Guangdong Museum of Art.

Time: 9 am-5 pm, daily except Monday, April 7-26
