Pudong New Area
The Pudong New
Area is located on the eastern banks of the Huangpu River. Before 1990, Pudong
constituted 350 sq km of boggy farmland which supplied vegetables to Shanghai
market. Today, veggies are grown elsewhere since Pudong has become a Special
Economic Zone (SEZ). As a young area Pudong symbolizes everything that is new
and exciting in Shanghai. The Oriental
Pearl TV Tower is a unique yet uninspiring piece of architecture. It stands
in Pudong Park in the new and developing Lujiazui District on the banks of the
Huangpu River. One has to queue up for hours to ride the structure’s high-speed
elevator for 50 yuan (100 yuan to go to the top). Jinmao Tower, the tallest building in China and the world’s third-tallest structure, now soars above the TV Tower. Skyscrapers are shooting up all over the place in Shanghai.
