eavesdropping

據(jù)報(bào)道,“9.11”事件幾個(gè)月后,美國(guó)總統(tǒng)布什曾秘密下令,允許國(guó)家安全局對(duì)境內(nèi)美國(guó)人和其他人的通信實(shí)施竊聽,以尋找恐怖活動(dòng)的證據(jù)。12月18日,美國(guó)共和黨與民主黨議員日同聲要求國(guó)會(huì)對(duì)布什未經(jīng)法庭允許私自授權(quán)監(jiān)聽國(guó)內(nèi)公民一事展開調(diào)查。

報(bào)道中eavesdropping指的是"竊聽",它的動(dòng)詞形式即為eavesdrop,eavesdrop一詞是這樣得來的:eavesdrop→eaves(n. 屋檐)+drop(v. 落下)→身體自屋檐落下→偷聽。

中國(guó)功夫里有一招“倒掛金鉤”偷聽術(shù),雙腳鉤住屋檐,頭沖下,耳貼窗,看來用eavesdrop來表示“偷聽”倒是十分形象。

那么,這個(gè)倒掛金鉤的人,就被稱為eavesdropper,也就是“竊聽者”。
