Fujian province will likely give the green light to vehicles registered in Taiwan, allowing them to drive legitimately in Fujian by the second half of 2015, according to Zhang Zhaomin, director of the Fujian Transportation Department, on March 8.

The vehicles, according to policies made by the dept, will be transported to the Pingtan Comprehensive Pilot Zone by two cross-Straits high-speed roll-on roll-off ships and obtain temporary plates before they enter the inland areas.

In April 2014, a delegation of Goddess Matsu pilgrims from Taiwan arrived in Pingtan with a car loaded with a sedan of a Matsu figure, marking the first time that a Taiwan-registered vehicle took the road in Fujian.

To normalize the move, authorities in Fujian will also make policies regarding traffic rules, plate management and insurance for Taiwan’s vehicles, according to Zhang.

“After those policies are released, we welcome individual tourists, groups and families to come to Fujian in their own vehicles. They can also use trucks to take products to the Chinese mainland, which will greatly lower logistics costs on enterprises and boost cross-Straits economic integration,” he said.
