The city of Changsha has made up a “three-year plan” to prevent and control Xiang River pollution, as a response to the Key Project No 1 initiated by Hunan Provincial People’s Government in September 2013 to protect the Xiang River valley.

Luo Guoqiang, deputy-director of Changsha water affairs bureau, said that by the end of 2013, nine sewage treatment plants had been built in the main urban area, with a processing capacity of 1.33 million tons of waste water per day. The major urban area’s sewage treatment rate has reached 96 percent, he said.

According to Luo, a total of 24 such plants have been planned for the urban district that include Wangcheng and Xingsha, 16 of which will be located in central urban and suburban areas.

The city’s sewage processing capacity is expected to reach 2.08 million tons per day by the end of 2015, 750,000 tons more than that of 2013.
