Gu Yuxiu Memorial is located at No3 Xueqian Street in Wuxi, Jiangsu province. Gu Yuxiu (1902-2002) was a famous scientist, educator and writer.
In 1905, Gu’s grandfather, Gu Weizhen, built the house – known as “Baoshan Hall” - for his youngest son, Gu Gengming. As the second son of Gu Gengming, he spent fourteen years of his youth there.
In November, 2005, a round of restoration and protection work on the memorial was finished. In August, 2006, Gu Yuxiu Memorial was officially opened to the public. In July, 2008, it was authorized to operate as a national AA tourist attraction. In December, 2011, it was approved to be a Jiangsu provincial protected cultural site.
The restorative memorial covers 829.4 square meters and has four buildings which cover 645.76 square meters. The horizontal inscribed board of this memorial was written by the former Chinese president, Jiang Zemin.
A four-part exhibition depicting Gu Yuxiu’s life story can be seen at the memorial house. The four parts introduce the major events and achievements of his life course and are entitled, “a leading scholar”, “a master in literature”, “patriotic personage” and “academic family.”
In recent years, the non-profit cultural center has brought its functional rooms into full play by holding a range of exhibitions and developing educational activities based around patriotism. The memorial house acts as a moral educational practice base for many schools in the area and a social practice base for volunteers in surrounding universities and colleges.
