Liuqiang Opera

(chinadaily.com.cn) Updated: 2015-09-01

Liuqiang Opera, also named Bangliu Opera, is a local Qingdao folk art. Originating in the mid-Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), it was developed from “Benzhougu” (a recitative folk art) and absorbed local folk tunes as well as yangge (a popular rural folk dance).

It is popular for its simple forms, local accent, natural and vivid performances.

It has some similarities with Maoqiang Opera and Wuyinxi (Wuyin Opera). The accompanying musical instruments include erhu (a two-stringed fiddle), dulcimer, xiao (a vertical bamboo flute), sheng (a reed wind instrument) and suona horn (a woodwind instrument).
