Dubbed by ancient Chinese scholars one of the "Four Gentlemen" – the other three being orchids, plum blossoms and chrysanthemums?–?bamboo plays an important role in traditional Chinese culture and is regarded as a symbol of virtue due to its qualities of uprightness and tenacity.
