The second-stage construction of the Jiading No 1 Social Welfare Institute in Shanghai got underway recently and is slated to be completed in June 2018.

The second stage project, covering an area of 9,838 square meters, includes a six-story 280 bed building which will be used for accommodation, healthcare, and rehabilitation.

After its completion, the total area of the institute will increase to 34,773 sq m and the number of its beds will rise to 778, a boon to local senior citizens.

The institute is the first district-level welfare institute for the elderly in Jiading. Different from other local nursing homes, it focuses on housing the elderly who suffer from dementia and have lost the ability to live on their own.

It is equipped with full-fledged facilities including an assembly hall for movies and performances, a multifunctional room for training programs, dormitories, a laundry room, a reading room, an infirmary, and a 400 sq m park.

The complete facilities allow the institute to offer its senior residents comprehensive services ranging from support in daily living, to physical and mental care.

According to local officials, the institute is intended to help alleviate problems arising from Jiading's rising elderly population. Statistics show that the number of local residents aged 60 and above exceeded 190,000 by the end of 2016 and accounted for 31.5 percent of the district's total registered population. Experts have predicted that by the year 2030 Jiading's aging population will total 237,000.
