Detention over parking ticket abuse

A driver in Yan'an has been punished with a week in detention after he wrote abusive comments on his WeChat Moments feed about a traffic police officer who gave him a parking ticket. The man, surnamed Li, 27, found the ticket on his car, which had been left illegally in a no-parking zone, at about 4 pm on Feb 20. He took the photo of the ticket and later posted it on his WeChat Moments along with abusive language about the police officer. Li was summoned to the police station the next day.

Corrupt official's appeal rejected

A corrupt official who accepted more than 2 million yuan ($291,000) in bribes had his jail sentence upheld by Shizuishan intermediate people's court on Friday. Li Weiguo, former head of Xixia district in Yinchuan, had earlier been sentenced to 6 years and 3 months imprisonment by a lower court for taking bribes, which he used to purchase an apartment and parking space for his mistress while in office. His appeal centered around his claim that he had supposedly written a letter of confession before the trial was held.

Officials dismiss plastic laver rumors

The capital's food and drug administration has dismissed rumors that inspectors have found fake laver made from plastic being sold in local markets. Wu Yantao, from the administration's food safety supervision center, said no plastic laver had been found in any of the 278 samples that had been examined during the past three years. Rumors have been circulating on social media that much of the laver being sold in local markets is actually made from plastic and is therefore harmful to health.

Police officer carried on car hood

A motorist in Xinchang county was detained after he drove for more than a kilometer with an auxiliary police officer on the hood of his vehicle. The suspect, surnamed Liang, was pulled over by two police officers at about 8 am recently for a traffic violation. However, he refused to cooperate and instead drove into the officers. One was knocked down and the other was left prone on the hood as Liang sped off. The suspect was forced to stop 1 km down the road when other motorists blocked his vehicle. The officer was sent to a nearby hospital.

Giant pandas spotted in wild

Forestry workers spotted two wild giant pandas in Leshan's Mabian and Ebian counties on Feb 24. The animals were sighted separately playing in the snow and both were said to be in good health. A villager claimed one of the pandas had bitten his goat.

Suicidal woman talked down

A live-stream hostess who threatened to throw herself off a building was talked down by firefighters after a standoff that lasted more than an hour in Changzhou. The woman was poised to jump from the 10th floor of a building in the city's busy downtown area at about 5:30 pm. Firefighters deployed an air cushion while persuading the woman, who comes from Chongqing, to give up her suicide attempt.

Fake company embezzles millions

An investigation has been launched into a fake company that allegedly defrauded the local government and private investors of millions of yuan by claiming to be building an automobile and auto parts exhibition center in Handan. The company is accused of using the name of a major international automobile manufacturer to dupe the local government, which invested 600 million yuan ($87 million) in the project about 5 years ago. A number of other investors were also affected after the project never materialized.
